Motorola DataWedge

If you intend to use this device for bar code scanning you will need to install Motorola DataWedge 3 or newer. This is available directly from Motorola.

Here is a link to Motorola (Please downloaded the latest version of the Datawedge for your particular device configuration.)

Motorola Support Site

You will also need to use Microsoft's ActiveSync program in conjunction with this installer. If you need assistance with installing DataWedge please work with Motorola technical support directly at www.motorola.com or by calling (800) 653-5350.

Configuring DataWedge

These instructions were written for the DataWedge 3.0, similar verbiage may apply in newer releases.

The Motorola DataWedge software needs to be configured to properly work with X Mobile. It is required that the DataWedge add a dollar sign ( $ ) to the beginning and end of all barcodes that are scanned. This is how X Mobile will determine what was a barcode scan and what was from the user typing data into the device. We also disable the scanner beeps from occurring as X Mobile will make its own beeps when a scan is successful. It can be confusing to hear the scanner give a successful scan beep and X Mobile give a failure scan beep at the same time. To eliminate this confusion we disable the scanner's beeps and only X Mobile beeps will be heard.

  1. To launch the DataWedge application click Start and go to Programs in your MC55/MC75. Then locate the DataWedge application in the list.

  2. Select "Basic Configuration."

  3. Select "Basic format."

  4. Select "Prefix to data."

  5. Enter a dollar sign ( $ ) in the field. Then click Save

  6. Select "Suffix to data."

  7. Enter a dollar sign ( $ ) in the field. Then click Save.

  8. Select "Back." Be sure that you don't click the Internet Explorer Back button which is located at the very bottom of the screen.

  9. You will be prompted with an alert asking if you want to save your changes. Click OK

  10. Select "Barcode input."

  11. Select the active profile, in this case SCN1.

  12. Select "Feedback."

  13. Select "Good decode."

  14. Select "Beeper."

  15. Click "Enabled" so the check mark disappears. This will turn off the scanner's beep when a scan takes place. It is not needed as X Mobile will already make beeps when a scan is successful or fails.

  16. Click "Back."

  17. Click "Back" again.

  18. And again.

  19. And again. Almost done.

  20. One more time.

  21. Click "OK" to save the changes.

  22. Select "Exit."

  23. Click "OK" to confirm you want to exit the Motorola DataWedge.

Disable Windows Mobile Word Completion

Disabling Word Completion in Windows Mobile will drastically increase the speed at which the scanner will scan barcodes into X Mobile. It is highly recommended to disable the Word Completion settings. Follow the steps below to accomplish this.

  1. In Windows Mobile click "Start" and select "Settings."

  2. Select "Input."

  3. Click on the "Word Completion" tab at the bottom.

  4. Uncheck "Suggest words when entering text" and "Enable Auto Correct."

  5. Click "ok" in the top right corner to save your changes.
